Halušky

I saw something my sister posted recently about haluski. It’s something we had sometimes at my grandparents’ house when I was younger. I still occasionally make it. Seeing it again makes me think about making it again soon!

Haluski is a simple, basic dish that is very yummy. I’m sure there are many different versions, but here’s how I make it. You need egg noodles, onion, cabbage, and lots of butter! This is one of those things that tends to be made in large batches, although I have been able to make small amounts at times. First, you want to wash and chop up the cabbage, and chop up the onion. Put a pot of water on to boil for the noodles. Melt butter in a frying pan on medium, and then add the cabbage and onion and turn to low. Cook the cabbage and onion on low, stirring occasionally, until they’re very soft and translucent. Add more butter as needed. Meanwhile, boil the noodles until they are tender and then drain them. When the cabbage and onion are soft, add the drained noodles. Cook everything together, stirring frequently, for about 5 or 10 minutes before serving. This is delicious as a side dish, or even as a small meal.

If you want to cut the carbs, you can try this with shirataki noodles instead of egg noodles. I did, and it was really good. Nothing’s quite like the original kind, though. To me, at least, it’s true comfort food.
