I remember when I was young, we went to visit my grandparents every Sunday and most holidays. They didn’t live very far away. All of my aunts, uncles, and cousins would meet there, and we’d have a wonderful mid-day meal together. Sometimes, we’d hit the jackpot – grandma would give us a homemade loaf of bread to take with us when we left. It didn’t always make it home, though – it was so yummy!

My grandfather has been gone for many years now. I visit his grave sometimes, and really miss seeing him. I wish my kids had been able to meet him.

My grandma is too old to cook for everyone now. Or even for herself. She’s incredibly upbeat, though. My husband and I recently went to visit her. The night before, I made some soup to take to her. When we got there, she was on the recliner, sleeping. A few of my relatives were there, so we spent some time hanging out with everyone. Then I went in to give my grandma a hug and kiss. I didn’t want to wake her, but we had to leave soon for the long trip home. I tried to avoid waking her, but she woke up and smiled. I decided to stay a little longer. My husband heated up the soup, and I gave her some. She said she liked it, which made me happy. I had an old photo album with me, so I got it out and started to show her the pictures. I thought she might enjoy seeing photos from the 60s and 70s, but I didn’t realize how much! We ended up staying much later than we had planned, but still managed to get home before midnight. It was a wonderful day. I am so lucky to have this time with her, and am already planning another trip to see her.
