Taqueria La Michoacana: The Amazing Mexican Food of Norristown

I am always on the hunt for the best foods in and out of town and I get very excited when I read about it in a magazine or an online publication but this time was different. I randomly decided to look up Mexican restaurants on my phone and get some feedback based on previous reviews to see what other people have recommended.

I came across quite a few to be honest but one in particular popped out at me, not because of the reviews, the images, or the map for that matter. In fact, it was the name: Taqueria La Michoacana: I admit that my Spanish is at 0 level compared to when I was still in school but who are we kidding, I never could have a conversation with a Spanish-speaking fellow! I would also like to take this opportunity to stress that the Mexican people I have met are wonderful people. They are kind, generous and come from a deep-rooted history!

After doing a little research it seems that the name Taqueria La Michoacana comes from Michoacán formally Michoacán de Ocampo officially the Free and Sovereign State of Michoacán de Ocampo, which is one of the 31 states which, with the Federal District, comprise the 32 Federal Entities of Mexico (Well, according to Wikipedia anyway) and the word Taqueria translates as a Mexican restaurant which specializes in tacos.

An experienced gentleman greeted us and we immediately liked the ambiance. I loved everything about the place, from the decorative ceilings, chandeliers that reminded me of Morocco; the mosaic tables that speak the name Mexico out loud! We loved it and we immediately felt comfortable and were ready to look at the menu!

I have to admit that I am not really good at reading menus but what I usually like to do when I go to an unfamiliar restaurant to eat is communicate with the waiter and simply ask them what they recommend. I ask questions about the food, what it is, how it is prepared and what’s in it. This way I get a clear idea of what I am up against and if I don’t like how it sounds I stare back at the menu and carefully read the ingredients which I think is good practice. Gives you time to learn more about the restaurant and see what it is that you can eat.

For starters, we ordered nachos (I know, big surprise!) But these were not your regular nachos that you buy elsewhere; these were AMAZING nachos that arrived with 3 different sauces. Regular, mild and spicy! I like spicy but my wife and stepchildren change their minds about how spicy! The nachos were gone within seconds, that’s how good they were!

We then ordered chicken tortilla soup that arrived with chunks of chicken, mozzarella cheese and strips of tortillas in a tomato based soup. It’s a good thing we decided to share the soup, since the massive bowl started to fill us up even when we divided it. We wanted to make sure to have enough room for the main courses, which we also decided to share so we could try as many new things as possible.

I ordered a mixed plate, my stepson ordered a shrimp based gordita, the other ordered carne asada, and my wife decided to be adventurous and order lengua encebollada (beef tongue). I know right? It was AMAZING!!!

For dessert, we ordered and shared fried Mexican ice cream, flan Napolitano, and tres leches cake. I liked the tres leches cake a lot;

If you are looking for the best Mexican food in town look no further than Taqueria La Michoacana, they are good people and make amazing food. I wouldn’t pay much attention to the one or two reviews that complained about the prices, we thought that the prices were very reasonable compared to other restaurants we have visited in the past. Give it a go, you won’t regret. Mirando hacia adelante a la próxima aventura! (Which means, Looking forward to the next adventure, “I Think” :).
